Praia do Camilo: A Hidden Gem in Lagos, Portugal

Praia do Camilo is a breathtaking beach located near Lagos in the Algarve region of Portugal. Hidden amongst dramatic cliffs, its golden sands and crystal-clear turquoise waters captivate visitors. Its unique natural beauty and tranquil atmosphere offer an unforgettable holiday experience.

How to Get There?

Reaching Praia do Camilo is fairly easy. You can get there by taxi, bus, or rental car from Lagos city center. If you're arriving by car, there's a parking area near the beach. However, parking is limited, so arriving early, especially during summer months, is recommended. Access to the beach from the car park involves descending approximately 200 steps. These steps are quite steep and challenging, making the beach potentially unsuitable for families with young children or those with limited mobility.

Why Choose Praia do Camilo?

Unlike many other Algarve beaches, Praia do Camilo offers a quieter and more secluded atmosphere. Protected by towering cliffs, it provides a relatively sheltered environment from wind and waves. This makes it an ideal choice for families with young children. The clear waters and golden sands are perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and snorkeling. The beach's natural beauty is also highly appealing to photographers. Vantage points atop the cliffs allow for stunning photographs of the beach and its surroundings. While a few small cafes and restaurants are available on the beach, facilities are limited, so bringing your own food and drinks is advisable.

When to Go?

The best time to visit Praia do Camilo is between May and September. During this period, the weather is warm and sunny, and the sea temperature is ideal for swimming. However, the beach can get quite crowded during the summer months. If you prefer a quieter experience, May or September are better choices. In winter, the beach is less crowded, but the weather may not be suitable for swimming.

Important Notes

Access to the beach involves steep steps both up and down. Therefore, caution is advised for young children and those with limited mobility. Sunbed and umbrella rental options are also limited, so bringing your own umbrella and towel is recommended. Despite the clear water, shower and toilet facilities on the beach are limited. We recommend checking the weather forecast before your visit and preparing accordingly to meet your needs.

It's a nice beach for photography and perhaps swimming, but there aren't many spots for swimming. It's very calm, with little or no tide. There's a short cave entrance that leads to the adjacent beach. There's also another cave you can enter. The seaweed smell can be quite strong, but it gets better.

What a great find! A stunning beach with stunningly tranquil scenery. It's a long climb up and down to get there—a lot of stairs. The descent isn't easy for those with knee or back problems. Pack light and enjoy the beach atmosphere. There's also a beach bar with affordable drinks and waffles.

One of the Algarve's most beautiful and iconic beaches, it's a must-see if you're staying in or near Lagos. Tucked between stunning golden cliffs and accessible by a long wooden staircase, the beach offers stunning views from above and a peaceful, sheltered cove below. The water is crystal clear and perfect for swimming or light snorkeling when conditions are calm. The rock formations and small caves add a sense of adventure, especially if you explore at low tide. The sand is soft and clean, but space is limited, so it's a good idea to arrive early, as it fills up quickly, especially during peak season. There are no sunbeds or rentals on the beach itself, so if you plan to stay a while, you'll need to bring your own towel or umbrella. A small cafe sits atop the cliffs near the stairs, offering snacks, drinks, and a fantastic viewpoint. Praia do Camilo combines natural beauty, excellent swimming conditions, and a bit of effort to reach, making it feel special. If you're prepared to climb the stairs and want a picture-perfect beach experience, it's definitely worth the journey.

After reading that it was one of the most beautiful beaches in Lagos, we had high expectations. We went early, around 6 a.m., hoping to watch the sunrise. Unfortunately, the experience didn't live up to our expectations. The beach was covered in seaweed and had a very unpleasant, unpleasant odor; there were very few clean areas to walk on. In the end, we decided to go to a neighboring beach.

It was full of seaweed today, but it's still a sight to behold. The beach and water were completely covered in seaweed today, so swimming wasn't an option. However, the cliffs and views were stunning as always. If you want a spot on the sand, arrive early—the beach is very small at high tide.
