Places to Swim in Sarıyer
Sarıyer, Istanbul's gateway to the Black Sea, offers a perfect summer escape with its lush greenery and pristine waters. We've compiled a list of popular swimming spots for those seeking a break from the city's chaos.
1. Kilyos Beaches (Kumköy)
Kilyos is undoubtedly the most well-known area in Sarıyer, boasting the longest coastline. While its location on the Black Sea coast can be rough, its wide beaches and recreational facilities make it a popular destination. Kilyos offers a public beach, as well as paid facilities. While it can be quite crowded, especially during the summer months, its amenities make it a popular choice.
2. Uzunya Beach
Located in a quieter, more natural bay near Kilyos, Uzunya is renowned for both its sea and the fish restaurants surrounding it. Because the bay's shape blocks some of the wind, it offers a more sheltered experience from the typical Black Sea waves. This beach is generally easily accessible by vehicle and is privately managed.
3. Büyük Harbour and Gümüşdere
These areas, located along the Black Sea coastline, boast small beaches and natural coves frequented by locals. Gümüşdere offers an alternative destination, especially for weekend getaways from Istanbul. While the beach infrastructure isn't as developed as Kilyos, it's ideal for those seeking natural beauty and tranquility. The seawater is generally clear, but it's important to be mindful of Black Sea currents.
4. Altınkum Beach (Terkos Lake Surroundings)
Located beyond the Grand Port, near Lake Terkos, Altınkum Beach boasts, as its name suggests, a fine, sandy shore. While the area may experience the Black Sea's roughness, its wide coastline offers a comfortable place to relax. While transportation can be more challenging than in more central locations, this keeps it relatively uncrowded.
Important Security Warning
Most of Sarıyer's beaches are on the Black Sea coast. The Black Sea has its own unique strong currents (rip currents) and rapid deepening. When entering the sea, always choose a controlled area with lifeguards and heed weather warnings.
