Places to Swim in Mar del Plata

Mar del Plata (La Feliz), Argentina's Atlantic Pearl, has beaches to suit every taste and budget. Whether you're looking for the action of the lively central beaches or the tranquil nature of the south, you'll find everything you need along this stretch of coastline.

Heart of the Centre: Bristol and Varese

These beaches are always the most crowded and energetic due to their proximity to the city center, ease of transportation and proximity to cultural landmarks.

Playa Bristol

Mar del Plata's most famous beach, a true postcard. Located right in front of the traditional Casino, it can be quite crowded during the summer months due to its central location. The water is shallow and the sea is more lively than other beaches. It's ideal if you're looking to socialize and be in the heart of the city.

Playa Varese and Cabo Corrientes

It's located a little further south than Bristol. Despite its central location, it's slightly less crowded and generally has clearer water. Cabo Corrientes' rocky headlands help block the wind and keep the waves down, making it a popular choice for families. The headland is a great spot for photos and sunset viewing.

Surfers' Paradise: Playa Grande and the South Shores

The city's most stylish and sports-focused area. These beaches, especially thanks to their good waves, are favored by surfers and other water sports enthusiasts.

Playa Grande

It's Mar del Plata's surfing capital. Numerous surf schools, stylish restaurants, and paradors (beach bars) are located here. The waves are usually excellent, and the facilities are luxurious and comfortable. It remains a popular spot for young people in the evenings.

Waikiki and Playa Acapulco

These beaches, further south from Playa Grande, are popular with advanced surfers as they offer more offshore waves. The facilities are sparser and have a more bohemian atmosphere.

Southern Region: Vast Dunes and Peace

As you move away from the centre, the beach strips widen and commercial facilities give way to wide sand dunes and a more natural landscape.

Punta Mogotes Complexes

It's one of the largest and best-organized beach complexes in Mar del Plata. It offers numerous swimming pools, parking, and ample rental cabanas (carpas). Punta Mogotes is known for its calm waters, where families with children can comfortably spend the day.

Chapadmalal and Los Acantilados

Located on the city's southernmost edge, these areas offer natural cliffs (acantilados) and a more isolated coastline. The sea is generally clearer and wavier. If you're looking for a completely natural beach experience without the crowds, this stretch of coastline is ideal, but accommodations can be difficult to find.

Sea Water Warning: Because Mar del Plata is on the Atlantic coast, sea water is noticeably cooler than Mediterranean or Caribbean waters, even during the hottest months of summer (January and February).
