Montenegro Beach Guide: Hidden Paradises of the Adriatic
Montenegro boasts a unique coastline with crystal-clear waters, where majestic mountains plunge steeply into the sea. Despite its small size, the country offers a wide variety of beaches, from sandy to pebbly and rocky. Get ready to discover these hidden gems of the Adriatic.
1. Budva Riviera: The Center of Action
Budva is considered the heart of Montenegrin tourism. The area is known for both its luxury resorts and popular public beaches.
Jaz Beach (Plaža Jaz)
Jaz, one of Budva's largest beaches, boasts a wide sandy beach and clear waters. It's ideal for families and water sports enthusiasts. It's also known for hosting major international music festivals during the summer months. The ground is generally a mix of sand and fine gravel.
Mogren Beach (Plaža Mogren)
Tucked away behind the cliffs just off Budva's Old Town, Mogren actually consists of two small beaches connected by a tunnel. It's a quieter, more sheltered spot, perfect for those looking to relax with a view of the Old Town. The sand is golden yellow, and the seabed is crystal clear.
Bečići Beach (Plaža Bečići)
Bečići, with its wide, long, and regular sand, was voted the most beautiful beach in Europe in 1935. Budva, despite being closer to the center, has a quieter atmosphere. It's home to large resorts and the ground is generally smooth pebbles.
2. Ulcinj: The Region Where Sand Reigns
Located in the very south of the country, close to the Albanian border, the Ulcinj region stands out for its completely sandy beaches, unlike the rest of Montenegro.
Velika Plaža (Big Beach)
At 13 kilometers long, Velika Plaža is Montenegro's longest beach. Its fine, dark sand (some places are said to be rich in minerals) and shallow waters make it an ideal haven for families with children and wind sports (especially kitesurfing). Thanks to its windy conditions, surf schools are quite common.
3. Bar, Sutomore and Kotor Bay
Bar and the Sutomore area offer a more local experience and dramatic natural views.
Crvena Plaža (Red Beach)
This small beach, located near Bar, takes its name from the reddish iron-oxide pebbles and rocks surrounding it. The contrast of red and blue creates a unique landscape for photographers. The beach is relatively small, but the water is quite clear.
Kotor Bay Beaches
Because the inland areas of the Bay of Kotor are largely coves, it's difficult to find long, sandy beaches like those in Budva. The swimming areas here are mostly concrete piers, platforms, or small pebble beaches (e.g., Dobrota and Muo). However, swimming in the calm waters and the historic mountain views offers a unique experience.
General Tips for Montenegro Beaches
- Sea Shoes: Since most of the beaches in the Budva and Bar area are pebbles, it is recommended to bring sea shoes for a comfortable experience.
- Sunbed Fees: Sunbed and umbrella rental fees at popular beaches vary depending on the beach's location. Many beaches have designated areas for free towels.
- Best Season: June to September, when sea temperatures are ideal and crowds are relatively light. July and August are quite busy.
