Places to Swim in Bali
Bali is renowned not only for its culture and rice paddies, but also for its diverse beaches, catering to everyone from surfers to those looking for a calm swim. Here are the best spots to swim safely and enjoyably in Bali.
Calm and Smooth Waters: Nusa Dua and Sanur
If your main goal is to swim in calm, shallow waters without being buffeted by waves, Bali's southeast coast is ideal. Beaches in this area are often protected by reefs, so the water is calm and perfect for families with children.
- Nusa Dua: The area where Bali's luxury resorts are located. The beaches here are clean, well-maintained, and most importantly, extremely calm. They're ideal for a morning swim.
- Sanur Beach: Located on the east coast, it's famous for its sunrises. Because the water level is low, you can swim safely even if you're a long way from the beach.
Energy and Sunset: Kuta, Seminyak and Canggu
These are Bali's most popular and lively areas. These beaches are often home to large waves and are preferred for surfing or cooling off near the shore rather than swimming. The sunset views are spectacular.
- Seminyak Beach: More luxurious and spacious than Kuta. There are plenty of areas where you can take surfing lessons or rent a sun lounger to cool off. It's important for swimmers to follow the designated areas.
- Kuta Beach: One of Bali's most famous beaches. While its strong waves make it ideal for novice surfers, general swimming should be cautious. Lifeguards are always on duty.
Adventure and Unique Landscapes: Uluwatu Region
Although access to the beaches on the Uluwatu peninsula at the southern tip of Bali is sometimes via stairs or rocky paths, the natural beauty and turquoise waters are worth the effort.
- Padang Padang Beach: Tucked away in a small cove, this beach is known for its white sand and relatively calm waters, making it a great place for swimming, especially during high tide.
- Bingin Beach: Although a favorite with surfers, the natural pools formed at low tide and the quiet areas protected by cliffs are ideal for swimming and cooling off. The views are breathtaking.
- Melasti Beach (Ungasan): A newly discovered, luxurious beach with pristine waters. It boasts white sand and stunning views, accessed by stairs. It's quite safe for swimming.
Always remember to check local tide and wave warnings before entering the sea.
