Places to Swim in Atakum
Atakum, Samsun's most dynamic and popular district, is the go-to destination for those looking to immerse themselves in the cool waters of the Black Sea during the summer months. However, it's important to remember that not every spot on the long coastline is suitable or safe for swimming. Here are some safe and enjoyable spots in Atakum, popular with locals, where you can swim.
Safe Swimming Spots
Incesu Beach and Recreation Area
Located at the western end of Atakum, it boasts generally cleaner and calmer waters than the town center. Its landscaping and amenities make it ideal for day trips. It's a popular choice due to its potential to achieve Blue Flag standards.
Çatalçam Beach
Located just outside the center of Atakum, on the Samsun-Bafra highway, it's quite popular thanks to its wide sandy beach and surrounding businesses. The sea's depth is more even than other beaches, making it suitable for families.
Kurupelit Public Beach (Near OMU)
Located near Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU), this area offers municipally designated swimming areas, especially during the summer months. Its central location and easy accessibility make it a popular destination. It's recommended to choose areas with lifeguards.
Adnan Menderes Boulevard (Designated Swimming Areas)
Along Atakum's main coastline, it is recommended to swim only in designated areas where lifeguard towers are located and where regular seawater analyses are conducted. Due to the risks of the Black Sea's currents, it is recommended to avoid venturing beyond these areas.
Watch out for Black Sea Currents!
Due to the nature of the Black Sea, Atakum Beach can occasionally experience strong currents (rip currents). For your safety, swim only in areas marked by buoys during lifeguard hours. Avoid swimming, especially during rough and windy weather.
