Places to Swim on the Amalfi Coast

In Amalfi, Italy's most stunning coastline, you'll not only enjoy the stunning scenery but also the opportunity to cool off in the crystalline Mediterranean waters. However, be aware that the beaches in this region are generally pebbly and rocky rather than sandy, and they can sometimes be difficult to access.

Positano and its iconic beaches

Positano's beaches, lined with pastel-colored houses, offer picture-perfect views. While these beaches are among the busiest, they have an atmosphere that deserves their popularity.

Spiaggia Grande

This is Positano's main beach and the center of action. Much of it is dedicated to paid umbrella and sunbed areas (lidos), but it's also ideal for pedal boat rentals and boat tours. The public beach area here is generally very small.

Spiaggia di Fornillo

Reachable via a short walking path or water taxi from Spiaggia Grande, Fornillo is quieter and more peaceful than the main beach, making it a perfect alternative for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of Positano.

Praiano and Natural Bays

Praiano, located between Positano and Amalfi, offers a more local, less touristy experience. The beaches here are often small coves tucked into cliffsides.

Marina di Praia

It's a sheltered, rocky cove built around a small fishing harbor. The surrounding cliffs offer shade for most of the day. In the evenings, the beach restaurants become quite lively.

Cala Gavitella

It's one of the most popular swimming spots in Praiano. Because it faces west, it's one of the few beaches that stays sunny until sunset. Access can be a bit challenging; you have to descend narrow stairs.

Amalfi and Family-Friendly Options
Spiaggia di Atrani

Within walking distance of Amalfi town centre, separated by a small tunnel, lies the beach of the charming town of Atrani. It offers a less crowded and more intimate atmosphere than Amalfi's main beach.

Maiori and Minori Beaches

Maiori and Minori, which boast the longest beaches on the Amalfi coast, have wider beaches with more sand than the other towns (though there's still a mix of pebbles). Their width makes them the best choice for families and those looking for more comfortable swimming spots.

Important Warnings and Tips
  • Stony Ground: Almost all beaches are composed of pebbles or large rocks. Wearing water shoes (water slippers) will provide great comfort.
  • Early Mornings: Beaches fill up quickly during the summer months. It's recommended to arrive before 9:00 AM to secure a spot on public beaches or rent a sunbed.
  • Fjord: While the Furore Fjord (Fiordo di Furore) is visually stunning, the beach may be closed or offer limited swimming space at times due to the danger of falling cliffs.
